Foster Dog:  Remmi

Foster Dog Location (city): Virginia Beach

Gender: Male

Age/weight: 2 years/44 lbs.

Spayed/Neutered: Yes

Basic intro/highlights: If you look at Remmi’s pictures, it’s easy to see he is not a golden retriever. But his adorable face and reddish-gold color caught our attention when a rural shelter needed help, and we said yes. He is a social bright-eyed redhead with easy to care for, short hair and a cropped tail. Our best guess is a hound mix of sorts (possibly with some lab) but with a golden heart – Remmi is even an honorary member of Golden Retriever Adventures and enjoys hiking with his golden retriever friends and their people.

General Activity Level:  medium to high energy level – Remmi is not a couch potato and does need adequate exercise.

Interaction with dogs: Very good, although it’s best to keep him from getting over excited.

Interaction with cats: There are no cats in his foster home, but he seems very interested in the ones he sees. May not be the best fit with cats.

Interaction with children: Overall good. Unknown toddlers running and shouting tend to bother him.

Physical fence required? Not if he’s walked multiple times a day.

Is physical fence an absolute requirement, or flexible? Can be flexible, but it’s important to note that he must be on a leash to start. He has not been trained to stay without a fence, and he is not invisible fence trained.

How many hours are they able to be left alone? 8-10 hours

Able to climb stairs? Yes.

Health concerns: None currently. Remmi was treated for heartworm disease after he arrived and recently got the “all clear”. He also had a partial tail amputation during his neuter due to a “happy tail” injury, a true testament to his happy personality and wagging tail (now he just has a shorter version of it). He does take Prozac for anxiety which has helped tremendously. He will occasionally get a skin rash in his pelvis area.

What basic commands are known? Reliable or still learning? Sit, down, “go lie down”, come, “go eat”, stay.

How does he or she walk on a leash, and what do you use (collar, harness, etc.)? Walks great on a Gentle Leader, otherwise will pull.

In need of obedience training? Like any young dog, he would benefit from obedience training.

Personality and additional information: Remmi is a happy-go-lucky guy and not dominant. In the past he barked a lot but now does so only if he is over excited. He’s not a big licker but loves pets. He will try to counter surf if given the opportunity. Remmi is crate-trained and does very well in his crate when needed.
